South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) will be introducing coin operated turnstiles at the toilets at both Sheffield Interchange and Barnsley Interchange.
The turnstiles will cost 20p to enter and will be installed and operational in Sheffield on Friday, April 27, and in Barnsley on Wednesday, May 2.
These charges are necessary to cover the ongoing cleaning and maintenance of the facilities. The introduction of the turnstiles will also help to prevent previous incidents of vandalism, graffiti and damage.
David Young, SYPTE Director of Customer Experience, said: "It’s with reluctance we are introducing the charge, but, given pressures on funding, we feel we can’t maintain a high standard of service without charging to use the toilets. We introduced turnstiles at Rotherham Interchange last year. These have operated with few complaints from customers."
The turnstiles will accept 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins; however, no change will be given. Therefore, CCTV monitored coin changing facilities will also be introduced along with the turnstiles and will change £1 and 50p coins only.
