TRANSPORT chiefs are launching an innovative new system that will allow bus and tram users to instantly get live information for their local bus and tram service sent straight to their mobile phone.
In a UK first South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has developed new technology to allow customers to view live departures for their local stop, to plan their journey and to check for bus and tram service disruptions in their local area.
Dubbed ‘YourStop’ the service, launched this week, allows customers across South Yorkshire to either scan a QR code with their mobile phone or additionally, at sixty sites in Sheffield City Centre use Near Field Communication (NFC) bus stops, providing their phone is equipped with that functionality. By scanning the QR code or holding their phone near to a NFC logo on the steel Sheffield Connect bus stop columns they will instantly be diverted to the latest travel information for that individual bus stop.
YourStop allows customers to:
• View live departures for that stop
• Plan their journey from the stop
• Check for bus disruptions in their local area
• View information videos explaining how to use travel tools
• Give feedback on what other travel information they would like to see
The QR code or NFC logo can be found under the Travel Information section on the bus stop. Once customers have accessed the page they can bookmark it so they can refer to it again anywhere along their journey.
By using YourStop customers can save time and money as there will be less need to make a telephone call or make a visit to an information centre to find out travel advice.
David Young, SYPTE Deputy Interim Director General, said: “This is a new service which is not available anywhere else in the UK at the moment. Previously customers were directed to general timetable and travel information. What YourStop does is to make sure you are instantly directed to the stop information for your actual bus stop. That way you can quickly find out what buses are coming and which is best for you.
“It is another example of our commitment to providing the best quality information to customers to allow them to plan their journey most effectively.”
