PUBLIC TRANSPORT users will be able to buy selected travel tickets from their local shop next week.
Over 300 stores across South Yorkshire will sell and top up smartcard tickets from 30 March, where the Payzone sign is displayed. Payzone outlets are also listed online at payzone.co.uk/store-locator
Passengers can currently get a range of 7 Day and 28 Day TravelMaster passes on smartcard – offering unlimited travel on South Yorkshire’s buses, trams and trains.
Smartcards can also be bought or topped up at ticket kiosks at transport Interchanges, and work to introduce online sales, mobile tickets and a pay-as-you–go system is underway.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) Deputy Interim Director General, David Young, said: “Travel tickets are already available through many different means. But together with local public transport companies, we are working to widen this range and to expand the number of places where people can buy tickets from.
“Making smartcards available at Payzone outlets offers convenience and choice. It is just one of the many ways we are providing smarter, more accessible products and services and giving people more public transport options that can be used when and where they want.”
Payzone Business Development Director, Damian Scholes, added: “Payzone is an easy way to add travel at your convenience in your local shops. Payzone has enabled a number of outlets at locations in South Yorkshire which are open, early morning or late into the evening seven days a week.
"Payzone has been delivering Smart Ticketing services across the whole of the UK and is delighted to be working with SYPTE and we look forward to delivering further services together.”
South Yorkshire’s phased smartcard project is delivered by SYPTE, TravelMaster, YorCard, and bus and tram operators. It is part funded by a £1.34m Better Bus Area Fund grant from the Department for Transport.
