Bus services

SYPTE provides funding for bus routes to run when operators are unable to provide services on a commercial (unsubsidised) basis.

This not only includes a number of routes to rural areas but also refers to journeys throughout South Yorkshire at certain times of the week (principally early mornings, evenings and Sundays) when funding is needed to ensure the service runs. A number of school buses carrying children to and from school are also funded through SYPTE.

Most of the routes and journeys operated under contract to SYPTE are awarded to operators through competitive tendering, with all bus operators required to be licensed by the Traffic Commissioner and subjected to stringent safety standards.
