Work to repair hole in the ground at Park Square to continue into next week

05 September 2014

- Tram service to remain suspended between the station and the city centre with replacement bus services in place from Monday

- Contractors to use specialist equipment over the weekend as investigations continue

Engineering work to repair a hole that appeared on the embankment near to the tram track at Park Square will continue into next week.

Structural engineers, Amey, were appointed earlier in the week on behalf of the three partners, Stagecoach Supertram, SYPTE and Sheffield City Council.

Following an initial phase of investigation, the experts have now brought specialist equipment to the site to help assess in greater detail the extent of the damage. This work will continue over the weekend and into next week.

Although the problem is not with the tram infrastructure itself, due to its proximity to the network, it had the potential to affect the safe running of part of the Supertram system and for that reason the decision was taken to temporarily suspend services through the affected area.

While work continues, tram services remain suspended between the station and the city centre. However, Stagecoach Supertram has arranged a shuttle bus service for passengers affected by this disruption who don't choose to or are unable to walk into the city centre. The service will run up to every ten minutes past the station and into the city centre from Monday (8th September) morning.

Managing Director of Stagecoach Supertram, Margaret Kay said, "We would like to thank our passengers for their understanding and their patience during this on-going work. Alongside the City Council and the SYPTE we are working hard to fully identify the problem so that we can make sure that all necessary repairs are made before we re-open this part of the network. We hope the replacement bus service will make it easier for our passengers to get around whilst the work continues into next week. The safety of our customers and staff is, and always will be, our top priority and for that reason it is essential that the necessary time is taken to understand the cause of this issue and repair it before we are able to resume the tram service in that area."

The shuttle bus will begin at Angel Street and will stop en route at Sheaf Street (Sheffield Station) > Shrewsbury Road > Angel Street.

Stagecoach Supertram will also have staff at Angel Street and Shrewsbury Road stops to help any customers requiring advice or assistance.

Current contingency plans are expected to continue until at least the middle of next week. The shuttle service will run up to every ten minutes between the station and the city centre.
