Free bike check-ups across the county for cyclists

09 April 2015

Cyclists are being encouraged to stay road-ready with Dr Bike maintenance sessions being held across South Yorkshire.

Carried out by a fully trained mechanic, the free drop-in events include a full cycle safety check and advice, free minor on-the-spot repairs, or referral to the nearest bike shop where needed.

Northern General Hospital’s Hadfield Building is one of the many locations offering Dr Bike sessions, between 7am and 1pm on 30 April, 21 May, 25 June, 30 July, 27 August, 24 September, 22 October, and 26 November.

Sarah Coates, Travel Plan Co-ordinator at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The Dr Bike sessions are very popular at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The mechanics are really helpful and provide a great service. I cycle to work every day and usually fix my bike myself, but I’ve used the Dr Bike sessions several times to make sure it’s OK and to get advice. We held a session at the NHS Sustainability Day and Dr Bike is the perfect way to celebrate cycling and sustainability!”

Dr Bike check-up sessions form part of the CycleBoost scheme, which is offered through the local Inmotion! partnership. Made up of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and the local authorities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, Inmotion! is working to help boost South Yorkshire’s local economy and get people back to work, education and training, as well as improving travel options for employees across the county.

CycleBoost scheme participants can also access the loan of a bike for four weeks, benefit from free support sessions to learn about route finding, advanced commuter safety skills and general cycling confidence, as well as learn how to fix a puncture.
