Make getting out greener this half term

Families can make getting around greener this half term by trying days out by bus, tram and train.

There has never been more to see and do in South Yorkshire, and top destinations - on the door step or further afield - are easy to explore by public transport.

Kelham Island - Architectural heritage, real ale and new developments, in what was once the heart of Sheffield's steel industry. Getting there:

  • By bus - services 57, 61, 62, 81, 82, 85, 86 Gibraltar Street/Shalesmoor or 7, 7, 8a Spitalfields/Mowbray Street
  • By tram - Yellow and Blue route Supertram services stop at Shalesmoor
  • By train - Sheffield rail station is a 25 minute walk away. Blue route Supertram services from Sheffield station stop at Shalesmoor.

Elsecar Heritage Centre – Craft workshops, antique centres, exhibitions and steam engines make for a unique, historical working hub nestled in rural Barnsley. Getting there:

  • By bus – services 66, 227 Wath Road
  • By train – Elsecar rail station is an 8 minute walk away

Wentworth Woodhouse – Regarded as Britain’s ‘greatest historic house’, this Grade-1 listed mansion and 82-acre estate near Rotherham was recently rescued for restoration, re-opening to tours after over 60 years’ slumber. Getting there:

  • By bus – services 227 Cortworth Lane or 44 Main Street

Yorkshire Wildlife Park - South Yorkshire's fastest growing wildlife and welfare attraction has over 300 animals and 60 different species, from Lemur Woods to Lion Country and Big Bugs to Polar Bears, just outside Doncaster. Getting there:

  • By bus – services 56, 57, 21, 25, 29, 55, 98, 99 Bawtry Road
