Stagecoach adds extra late Service X17 journeys between Meadowhall for workers

08 November 2018

The bus operator is now running some extra later evening and weekend journeys, in partnership with SYPTE (South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive).

An extra journey from Meadowhall to Barnsley runs at 9.15pm on Mondays to Fridays. On Saturdays an additional journey runs from Barnsley to Meadowhall at 7.35pm, and an extra journey will take passengers from Meadowhall to Barnsley at 8.15pm.

A later bus to Sheffield, Chesterfield and Matlock leaves Meadowhall at 9.16 pm on Mondays to Saturdays.

The last departures on Sundays are amended to leave Meadowhall at 5.12 pm towards Barnsley and at 5.13 pm and 6.17 pm towards Sheffield and Chesterfield.

Meadowhall Transport & Community Engagement Manager, Debbie Owen, said: “We want to make sure everyone visiting Meadowhall can make sustainable travel choices. In direct response to feedback, we’re delighted to have been able to work in partnership with SYPTE and Stagecoach to add later X17 services. It’s fantastic news, and will be welcomed by both employees and customers looking for travel options to and from the centre on darker nights.”

SYPTE Director of Public Transport, Ben Gilligan, added: “We are pleased to support extra journeys on this important cross-county service. Providing the connections people need to access employment or education, shopping and leisure activities on public transport is key to keeping our region moving and for economic growth. We hope the new travel choices the evening and weekend service brings will benefit both current and new customers.”

A fleet of eight new Gold buses was launched on the service in October, which feature high-back, Italian hand-stitched e-leather seats, ambient lighting, free Wi-Fi and USB charging points – a £1.9 million investment by Stagecoach.

Matt Davies, managing director, Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “The X17 route between Barnsley, Meadowhall, Sheffield, Chesterfield and Matlock has always been popular with our customers, but since the route extension we’ve noticed an increasing demand for journeys between Barnsley and Meadowhall, to allow people to travel to and from work.

“We’ve worked closely with SYPTE to put in place some extra journeys that will significantly improve the travel options available to people working at Meadowhall and living in Barnsley, and we’re hoping that this benefits the local community.”
