We work with bus, tram and train operators across the region to deliver the best possible public transport network for South Yorkshire.
Through our involvement in South Yorkshire’s four Bus Partnerships we play an active role in planning, coordinating and improving bus services across the region.
Working together with local authorities and bus operators, we aim to provide a simpler, coordinated service which meets the needs of customers across the region. By joining forces on decisions around route planning, ticketing and service frequency we make it easier for people to get around Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield by bus.
We work collaboratively with rail operators Northern, Transpennine Express and East Midlands Trains to deliver better rail services for passengers in South Yorkshire.
We have oversight of rail franchise agreements, checking that operators are meeting their obligations in our region and working directly with them, or via Transport for the North, to resolve any issues that arise.
We also actively look for opportunities to improve rail services, working in partnership with operators to deliver service enhancements that go over and above statutory obligations. For example, we make the case for more late night and Sunday services, better signposting to other modes of public transport at rail stations and timetable alterations that would better serve customers.
Together with local authorities and partners in the rail industry, we submit funding bids and pursue opportunities to deliver improvements to stations to ensure they provide the expected level of facilities and connect with their local communities.
Through our positive links with community rail groups across the region we also work jointly with operators to deliver projects that improve local rail stations for the benefit of their community.
South Yorkshire’s Supertram network is owned by SYPTE. In 1997, SYPTE entered into a Concession Agreement with South Yorkshire Supertram Limited (trading as Stagecoach Supertram). Stagecoach Supertram is responsible for operating and maintaining Supertram until 2024.
SYPTE manages this concession to ensure the tram network offers a safe, reliable and punctual service to customers and the infrastructure is maintained in line with the terms of the Agreement. Since October 2018, Stagecoach Supertram has also been responsible for the operation of Tram Train services between Sheffield and Rotherham Parkgate.
If you need to work near the Supertram network, authorisation may be required. Further information can be found here.
