How we work with the Transport Sector

Working closely with leading UK transport organisations enables us to learn valuable lessons from others operating across the transport sector, while sharing our expertise and experience of delivering an effective public transport network for South Yorkshire.

Urban Transport Group

SYPTE is committed to helping the Urban Transport Group (UTG) to make the case for urban transport, attracting the funding and powers needed to plan and deliver sustainable public transport networks.

Belonging to the UTG connects us with a network of peer organisations facing similar challenges, as well as opportunities to innovate to improve urban transport. It helps us to understand the wider urban transport environment, share best practice and spot emerging national trends. For example, taking a coordinated approach to drive up falling bus patronage or to promote active travel.

Transport for the North

Transport for the North (TfN) was created to transform the transport system across the North of England, providing the infrastructure needed to drive economic growth. SYPTE is one of the North’s 20 local transport authorities involved in this partnership to ensure funding and strategy decisions about transport in the North are informed by expert local knowledge and requirements.

Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis represents South Yorkshire on both operational and strategic transport issues affecting our region. Experts from SYPTE advise the Mayor on operational issues to inform those discussions and sit on various TfN steering groups to represent the aspirations of the South Yorkshire region. Our people are also a part of programme teams working to shape improvements in vital areas including:

  • Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) – a major strategic rail programme designed to transform connectivity between key economic centres of the North by building capacity and speeding up journey times between northern cities
  • Integrated and Smart Travel. Using emerging technologies to deliver modern payment methods and mobile travel information that customers want and expect, making it easier to use, pay for and access information about public transport.

Light Rail Safety Standards board

In 2019, the Transport Minister announced funding for a Light Rail Safety Standards board to ensure safer journeys for passengers on trams. This new body will enable more effective cooperation and drive forward safety improvements across the UK tram industry.

As SYPTE owns South Yorkshire’s Supertram network, a concession currently run by Stagecoach, we are actively involved in the board to ensure the latest best practice on safety is embedded throughout our tram network.
