South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has won a prestigious National Transport Award, celebrating innovation and excellence across the public transport sector.
SYPTE has won an award in the category for ‘Integrated Transport Authority of the Year’ recognising a year of significant success for the organisation.
SYPTE has brought major projects to fruition, including redeveloping Rotherham Central Station, progressing plans for the innovative Tram-Train scheme, Bus Rapid Transit link, Smart ticketing, High Speed Rail, and its role (alongside partners) in establishing the Sheffield Bus Partnership.
SYPTE has a track record of successful delivery, having secured more than £150million worth of external funding during the last two years to drive forward schemes for unlocking economic growth and improving the region’s public transport network. By working closely with partners it continues to identify, develop and deliver key multi-modal strategic priorities at a local and national level.
Cllr Mick Jameson, Chairman of SYITA, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious National Transport Award in recognition of the significant progress we have made across the whole of South Yorkshire. These achievements have been made against a backdrop of ongoing efficiencies and budget savings and are a reflection of our continual commitment to understand our customers and respond to their needs.”
Ben Still, SYPTE Interim Director General and David Young, SYPTE Deputy Interim Director General, said: “We are proud of the dedication our staff and partners have shown in enabling us to develop and deliver an efficient, affordable and improved public transport network for the whole region.”
Further success was also achieved at the event, with David Brown, SYPTE’s former Director General, who left the organisation for Mersey Travel in May this year, receiving an award for Outstanding Contribution to Local Transport largely for work at SYPTE including his leadership in establishing the complex and geographically far reaching Sheffield Bus Partnership between First South Yorkshire, Stagecoach in Sheffield, Sheffield Community Transport, Sheffield City Council and SYPTE.
The National Transport Awards 2013 are organised by Transport Times and supported by the Department for Transport (DfT) and Passenger Focus.
