Sheffield bus passenger numbers continue to rise


- 4.65 million more fare-paying passengers (9.6%) in 18 months
- Reverse in long-term decline of the city’s bus market

New figures show that the number of people using buses in Sheffield continues to rise.

Passenger numbers for overall journeys as part of the city’s ground-breaking Sheffield Bus Partnership have grown by 740,000 (0.9%) in the first 18 months. While fare-paying passengers have risen sharply by nearly 10% at an increase of 4.65 million.

Records also show continued improvements in punctuality and reliability, with 98.7% of buses running as scheduled, and up to 170 (44%) fewer customer complaints received a month, compared to pre-Partnership levels and levels elsewhere in the county.

It builds on the positive results delivered by the award-winning Partnership since it launched in October 2012, which has seen a turnaround in the historic decline of bus use over nearly three decades, with 2.87 million (3%) additional overall passenger journeys predicted for its first two years of operation.

Sheffield Bus Partnership is a voluntary agreement that brings together South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Sheffield City Council and bus operators Stagecoach in Sheffield, First South Yorkshire, and Sheffield Community Transport. It aims to improve the city’s bus service and increase passenger numbers by making the network easy to use, reliable and more convenient, with fewer changes to routes and timetables.

Discounted multi-operator tickets that can be used interchangeably on different buses have seen some fares fall by 23%, benefitting at least 60% of paying passengers. One hundred and twenty new, greener, low-floor buses have also been introduced on Sheffield’s streets, and £4.5 million invested in bus stops, bus routes and traffic management.

We have tried very hard to listen to customers and local communities to provide a bus network that is designed around their needs, and which people can depend on.

“Together with a flexible network, value-for-money tickets, and figures showing improvements in punctuality and reliability, the new passenger numbers highlight the difference Sheffield Bus Partnership continues to make.”
