Have your say on public transport services

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is giving people the chance to have their say about public transport information, travel stops and interchanges in the county.

Faced with the need to make budget cuts SYPTE wants the public to give their view on how it delivers its services, and how they might be delivered in the future.

The consultation, called ‘Have Your Say’, is being launched on Monday 1 September and will run until Wednesday 8 October.

It will ask people about the journeys they take on public transport, what tickets they buy and how they buy them and how they like their public transport information to be delivered. It will also ask what people think about transport interchanges, bus stops and the customer services that SYPTE delivers.

The easiest way for people to take part is online at sypte.co.uk/haveyoursay. Paper copies will also be available at Interchanges from the Travel Information Centre shops and there will be roadshows at Barnsley, Doncaster, Meadowhall, Rotherham and Sheffield interchanges to help and encourage customers to take part.

Customers who take part online will also have access to a booklet explaining the consultation and provide some background information. Small numbers of this booklet are available at Interchanges for customers to read if they so wish.

Over the past four years SYPTE has had its budget cut by more than £25 million and has made deep cuts to its workforce. That has meant that some changes have been made to save money.

This year saw cutbacks made to the OAP concessionary travel scheme, community transport fares went up by 50p and funding was withdrawn from the FreeBee bus services in Sheffield, Rotherham and the #638 Park and Ride express bus service in Doncaster.

By giving their views through the consultation, the public can help SYPTE to make sure that it is spending money in the places where it is needed most, and that the changes we make are the right changes for customers.

David Young, SYPTE Deputy Interim Director General, said: “SYPTE needs to look at further ways of saving money, which is why we are asking the public about how we provide public transport information and about our interchanges. The feedback we get will help us to plan how we deliver these services in the future.

“We have had to make some difficult choices over the past few years, and the financial environment remains challenging, but we are not currently working on plans to change the current concessionary travel offer or to cut the bus services funded by SYPTE.”

A report summarising the views people share through the consultation will be made available online at sypte.co.uk/haveyoursay, or by request in hard copy form, from November 2014. To request a hard copy of the report, please email haveyoursay@sypte.co.uk
