Rotherham bus passenger numbers increase


- Initial Rotherham Bus Partnership reports indicate an extra 27,000 bus journeys have been made since the launch of the Partnership in July 2014
- Customer complaints have reduced by 19% since launch

New figures show that the number of people using buses in Rotherham has increased since the launch of Rotherham Bus Partnership in July 2014.

Passenger numbers for overall journeys as part of the town’s Rotherham Bus Partnership have grown by 1.1% year on year, in the first 8 weeks. While fare-paying passengers have jumped by 5.9%. Reports suggest 27,000 extra bus journeys have been made in this time.

Records show improvements in month on month comparisons of punctuality and reliability, with 97.9% of buses running as scheduled, compared to 95.3% in August 2013. There have also been fewer customer complaints received. Compared to the same period in previous years, comments have fallen by 19%, a reflection of significant positive network changes.

Rotherham Bus Partnership is a voluntary agreement that brings together South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and bus operators First South Yorkshire, Stagecoach Yorkshire, Stagecoach East Midlands and TM Travel. It aims to improve Rotherham’s bus service and increase passenger numbers by making the network easy to use, reliable and more convenient, with fewer changes to routes and timetables.

Paul Lynch, Managing Director at Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “Rotherham’s bus network offers a convenient, stress free and friendly way to get around. Improvements to the network, punctuality and a wide range of tickets are making the bus a realistic alternative to the car, and these figures show that people really are benefitting from these changes”.

“I hope that people in the area continue to see the improvements that the Partnership has brought to local buses so far, and continue to use the bus whenever it’s the best travel option”.

Rotherham Borough Council’s Strategic Director of Environment and Development Services Karl Battersby said: “Our aim in setting up the Partnership was to enable providers, by working together, to offer bus customers in Rotherham more frequent, regular buses, more choice, and a better, value-for-money service.

“It is apparent that customers are seeing the benefits for themselves; they are voting with their feet with more people choosing to take the bus as opposed to other forms of travel. It shows we are on the right track!”

Managing Director for First South Yorkshire Ben Gilligan said: "These are very encouraging results at the start of the Rotherham Bus Partnership and again demonstrates what we can achieve when we work together for the benefit of customers. I'm sure the Partnership will go from strength to strength and we will continue to work hard to deliver more improvements across the district and make travel by bus even more attractive."
