Residents invited to review Penistone bus plans

NEW plans for buses in Penistone are to be put to residents next month, based on feedback following public consultation and from local councillors.

1,162 people had their say on proposed changes to the area’s bus network – which aim to better co-ordinate buses on key routes and make sure services are sustainable - in an eight week consultation held by Barnsley Bus Partnership between 13 June and 31 July 2016.

Over a third of responses were about proposals for the Penistone area, which sought views on how some services could be replaced by local community buses.

Using consultation feedback and guidance from Penistone councillors, Barnsley Bus Partnership has now developed recommendations for services, which will be available for residents to discuss at drop-in sessions at Penistone Community Library on Thursday 15 September and Thursday 22 September from 9am-12pm midday.

Key proposals for the Penistone area include:

• Sheffield and Barnsley commuter trips and buses to schools
• Two-hourly evening and weekend services linking local communities
• Penistone – Thurgoland – Barnsley daytime services
• Penistone – Holmfirth daytime services

A Barnsley Bus Partnership spokesperson, said: “Thank you to everyone that took part in the consultation and provided feedback. Your views are important and will help us make sure that buses across Barnsley are meeting the needs of people who live in, work in and visit the town.

“A significant number of responses were received from residents in and around Penistone. Analysing these comments, and working closely with local ward and parish councillors, we have now developed proposals for how buses might best serve the area within the resources available.

“Residents are invited to review our plans, and discuss them with Barnsley Bus Partnership representatives, at drop-in sessions on 15 and 22 September, to make sure that the changes we are proposing support the community.”

Analysis of wider consultation comments about bus services across Barnsley is ongoing. Proposals for Barnsley’s bus network, including Penistone services, will be reported to Barnsley Council’s Cabinet, and the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority Transport Committee meeting on 7 November. Changes are expected to be introduced in January 2017, subject to plans being approved.
