WITH the countdown to Christmas underway, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is reminding customers to plan ahead for their festive period travel in Barnsley and Doncaster, by checking timetables and services on travelsouthyorkshire.com/christmas.
“Most local bus, tram and train services will follow Saturday timetables with an early finish (with last departures from around 5:30pm and 7pm) on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve”, says SYPTE’s Director of Customer Services Tim Taylor, “but, as usual, there will be no bus or train services on Christmas Day or Boxing Day in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, except for Stagecoach operating bus services to and from XPO Logistics for shift times, and a special X1 bus service between Maltby and Sheffield city centre on Boxing Day.”
“In Sheffield bus and tram services will be operating reduced services on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. With free parking charges at the city’s Park and Ride sites it might be a great time to get out and about to meet friends or check out the sales.”
On Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29, buses will follow a Saturday service with some exceptions. Train services will run as normal, but with a late start. On Saturday, Northern will be operating a reduced service due to industrial action. On Sunday 30 December bus and train services will follow a Sunday timetable.
On New Year’s Eve buses will run a Saturday service, with last departures between 5:30pm and 7pm. Trains will run a normal service, with last departures between 7pm and 8pm.
There will be no bus services in Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham on New Year’s Day, except from Stagecoach service to and from XPO Logistics for shift times. Trains will operate as normal, but with a late start.
Train services will resume as normal from Wednesday 2 January, but bus services will follow a Saturday timetable with some exceptions until Friday 4 January (inclusive).
Trains are expected to be busier than usual and customers are encouraged to check with National Rail or their operating company for any planned engineering works or local service updates.
From Wednesday 26 December until Tuesday 1 January, holders of SYPTE-issued English National Concessionary Travel Scheme Senior Passes can travel for free on bus and tram, and for half fare on Northern Rail services within South Yorkshire, without restrictions from the start to end of service.
