Bus Boost in Sheffield thanks to partnership

South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority (SYITA) has received a report explaining that bus passenger numbers, punctuality and customer satisfaction of services in Sheffield have all improved since the launch of the Sheffield Bus Partnership, a ground breaking agreement between South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Sheffield City Council and bus operators First, Stagecoach and Sheffield Community Transport (SCT).

The Sheffield Bus Agreement is a voluntary partnership that brings together SYPTE, First South Yorkshire, Stagecoach in Sheffield, SCT and Sheffield City Council. It launched on 28 October 2012, supported by a multi-channel promotional plan using the promotional banner ‘SimpliCity’ and was labelled a ‘historic’ development by Transport Secretary of State Norman Baker MP.

Performance results from the first three months show that the number of full fare paying passengers has risen by 2.8% since the launch, which saw multi-operator fares fall by up to 23%. The number of buses on time has also improved by 2% compared to the same time last year.

Transport bosses believe the performance improvements are a direct result of the customer benefits the Sheffield Bus Partnership offers, including better value for money multi-modal tickets that allow travel on buses and trams in the city, investment in nineteen new hybrid buses by Stagecoach, and a singly promoted network.

Councillor Mick Jameson, Chair of SYITA, said: “These results demonstrate an encouraging shift in bus passenger trends, and would have been even better without the recent snow.  We listened to customers and introduced improved timetables in January which will further improve punctuality.

“By working together, the partners are able to make Sheffield’s bus network easier to use and more attractive, reflected by the improved customer satisfaction measures.

The Sheffield Bus Partnership aims to achieve a three per cent passenger growth in the first year up to October 2013.
