SYPTE provides funding for bus routes to run when operators are unable to provide services on a commercial basis. We support buses serving rural communities and subsidise some early morning, evening and Sunday journeys which would not be commercially viable but are essential, for example for shift workers to access employment. We also fund some school buses, carrying children to and from school.
Most of the routes and journeys operated under contract to SYPTE are awarded to operators through a competitive tendering process. All bus operators are required to be licensed by the Traffic Commissioner and are subject to stringent safety standards.
